Dell’s concept Ori a foldable screen laptop review

Dell may have already announced its big laptop firsts with the updated XPS 13 last week, but the company brought two new laptop prototypes to CES 2020: Dell’s concept Ori a foldable screen laptop and the dual-screen Concept Duet. Dell’s two prototypes together embody what the future of computers may look like, and it’s one in which laptops have far more screen real estate than they do now.

Dual-screen

None of the Dell devices are entirely new. Surface Neo (which, unlike the Concept Duet, actually has been advertised as a real product),the Dell’s concept Ori a foldable screen laptop looks extremely similar to the Lenovos foldable PC prototype that the company showed off last year, while the dual-screen Concept Duet is similar to Microsofts’ upcoming one.

QHD + resolution

Of the two, the more blatantly futuristic is the Dell’s concept Ori a foldable screen laptop – as in “origami”. Because it bends. You get it. Dell wouldn’t offer much detail on any of the specs, except that the screen measures roughly 13 inches and offers QHD + resolution. Other specifications – like the processor, graphics, or even the vendor who creates the large folding screens – are being kept under the lid for now. The screen looked good, although there was a visible crease on the screen, especially when it was partially bent.

Foldable

There’s also a keyboard accessory that can be placed over any of the touchscreens, with the rest of the screen also serving as a trackpad for more “traditional” laptop work. Alternatively, the two screens can flip over to form a single screen tablet, which Dell points out as an advantage of the two separate screens over a single flexible foldable. The end result is a bit heavier than a regular laptop, considering the extra screen, but not so much that it would be possible to carry it around.

Windows 10X

It’s important to note that Microsoft is already pushing dual-screen and foldable hardware significantly with its upcoming Windows 10X software. These concepts are not running Windows 10X (not actually available yet), but the mere fact that there is software sourced from the Windows manufacturer that is specifically designed for hardware to the mainstream.

Dell Concept Ori

The Dell Concept Ori is a new prototype device following the foldable PC trend. Lying flat, Concept Ori looks like nothing more than a 13-inch tablet, but once you fold the screen it becomes something revolutionary. This foldable device is capable of displaying two screens at once, providing incredible versatility. Dell has pointed out that Ori is only a conceptual device, so there is no guarantee that it will be available to the public in the future. But with rival companies like Microsoft, Lenovo, and Intel releasing their own version of this technology, I bet there’s a good chance Ori will see an official release.

What people can do with a foldable laptop?

We know how to make a foldable display, but what will people do with it? Dell gave me numerous demos demonstrating some of the new form factor’s capabilities. In one, the gadget is folded in half, with a video call playing on the top half and the user taking notes on the other. At the end of the call, I unfolded Ori so that the screen was flat and watched a movie trailer using the entire 13-inch panel.
