The Penguin B technology is an unnamed aerial vehicle that was upgraded with an optional 7.5-liter capacity fuel tank and 80W onboard generator system by UAV Factory in February 2011. This way, its endurance was increased from six hours to more than 20. They displayed this small unmanned aerial vehicle at the Eurosatory Defence Expo which was located in Paris in June 2010.

Penguin B UAV design

This small unmanned aerial vehicle is designed in a way to be suitable for military and commercial applications. For operating in hostile environments of rain and snow, they designed the 2.2m long and 3.3m wide aerial vehicle. It will take off from a runway or a car-top launcher (CTL) and can be recovered by a large parachute.

Features of the Penguin B UAV

This unmanned aerial vehicle has a modular composite airframe, high lift flap system, detachable V-tail, and payload bay, GPS bay, aluminum tail boom joints, heat radiators, push-pull electrical connectors, two-bladed propeller, DZUS fasteners, and large access hatches.

This unmanned aerial vehicle can also boost the bartering payload module underneath the front fuselage. They have packed it in a watertight and robust transportation case. Its weight is about 27kg. This watertight case includes an obliterable lid, bolts, tools, internal, Velcro straps, and padded stringers and is 1.3m long, 0.54m high, and 0.7m wide.

Its lithium-polymer charger which is in the Penguin B works as a backup battery in the pre-flight checks, engine failure, and low engine speeds. They have sealed the fuselage with soft neoprene, this way avionics and payloads of the vehicle can be protected in a harsh environment.

Sensors and navigation capabilities

Penguin B has electro-optic (EO) and infra-red (IR) sensors. You can control it manually from the PGCS or it can be controlled through autonomous mode.

Engines

It is equipped with a four-stroke Honda engine which is rated at 1.3hp to 2.5hp of output power. A fixed tricycle type landing gear containing two main gear legs, oleo-pneumatic shock absorbers, and one dirigible nose gear leg is fitted in the aircraft.

Portable ground control station

UAV Factory of Latvia has designed and manufactured the PGCS. It processes, retrieves, stores, and monitors real-time imagery that had been captured by the vehicle’s payload cameras. Penguin B VTOL UAV can be controlled by a single operator. Besides, its payloads can be supervised.

Due to the flexibility of its design, it is suitable for military and commercial applications. The PGCS can be shaped for autopilot operations. The PGCS includes features a 13-inch CF-31 laptop of Panasonic make, advanced battery power systems, video receivers, a 17-inch secondary touch screen, RC-transmitter mouse, and other auxiliary equipment.

Performance

It can fly at a maximum speed of 129km/h. Its take-off run is 30 and its service ceiling is 5,000m. it also can fly for about 20 hours.
