By including a magnetic stand, a slew of ports, an Apple Watch wireless charger, and two Qi chargers, the Kensington StudioDock is an all-in-one solution for power users who rely on their iPad Pro to get their job done.

The StudioDock’s core notion: putting all of your Apple gadgets in one spot, then you can save a lot of desk space

However, I doubt that individuals would require their iPhone wireless charger to be connected to their laptop in practice. I nearly always used my MacBook Pro in “clamshell” mode on another stand until recently, and I kept it out of the way to save space, which the StudioCaddy achieves admirably. However, I prefer to have my iPhone charging in front of me at my desk so that I can see what notifications are coming in, so the all-in-one method is mostly lost on me.

StudioDock aims to address a number of difficulties while vastly enhancing the capabilities of the iPad Pro

That’s a lot to cram into one device, so the Kensington StudioDock isn’t going to be a cheap addition to your desk. This has a presence on your desk, depending on whether you get the 11-inch or 12.9-inch model. Your iPad Pro is magnetically attached to the top, which has an angled edge on the top-left where the camera is located and a USB-C connector on the right for charging.

It can be rotated to portrait mode at any time

When connected, your iPad Pro will draw 37.5W of power, far more than the 18W charger Apple includes in the box. It’s horizontal by default, but it can be rotated to portrait mode at any time. The iPad mount attaches to the StudioDock and can be tilted up and down, even facing backward to a degree. You can rotate the screen around for others to see, which is useful for collaboration, though it doesn’t go far enough if the other person is sitting. The Kensington StudioDock is primarily made of aluminum, including the majority of the base. The finish has a pleasant, premium feel to it, which is consistent with Apple’s offerings. The dock’s design is even similar to Apple’s own Pro Display XDR stand.

StudioDock has a few features that make us think

How long will this, for example, last? A conventional USB-C hub and stand can survive for years, but the Kensington StudioDock will only be helpful if Apple keeps the iPad size stable. There is no obvious way to adapt a device to a different size.

Fortunately, many professionals will keep their iPads for years, and businesses will keep them even longer, so this isn’t expected to be a major issue. On a second-generation model, we’d like to see a MagSafe wireless charger instead of the half-as-fast Qi charger, as well as more USB-C ports rather than USB-A ports. Otherwise, Apple must do more with iPadOS, such as improved support for external monitors. But, notwithstanding these quibbles, Kensington has done an outstanding job in creating a pro-level accessory and an Apple watch charger. It feels right at home and does exactly what we need when charging the Apple products.
