What is Noise Canceling technology and how does it work?

Noise cancellation is the practise of decreasing undesired background and ambient noises using passive and active noise cancellation technologies. If you want to know what is noise Canceling technology and how does it work, read on!

Types of Noise Canceling

Now that we understand the fundamental premise behind using ANC to decrease and block unwanted noise, it’s time to learn about the various types and settings for implementing them.

ANC with Feedforward

The feedback mic is located on the outside of the ear cup in this configuration. When incoming noise is recognised, the ANC system generates opposing signals, which are broadcast through the headphones’ speakers. Because the mic is outdoors, it picks up and responds to ambient sounds more quickly.

ANC Reaction

The feedback mic is situated within the ear cup and in front of the speaker in this configuration, allowing it to receive the generated signal as the listener does. As a consequence, it can better respond to changes in sound and make the appropriate modifications. One problem is that it lags behind feedforward ANC in blocking noise within the 1-2 kHz range.

How Noise Canceling works

Let’s examine how each one works and how they differ in terms of execution and efficacy.

Noise cancellation using passive means

Prior to the invention of Active Noise Cancellation, the only option to suppress ambient sound was to place a physical barrier between the ears and the surroundings. Headphones are naturally intended to cover the ears and suppress ambient noise, allowing you to hear the music coming from the source clearly.

High density foam

The ear cup size, clamping force of the headband, cushioning, fit, and design utilised in headphones all contribute to their capacity to block out sound. When it comes to headphones, a circumaural (full-size) design that encloses the entire ear and ear cups constructed of numerous layers of high density foam are your best chance for passive noise suppression.

In ear motion

Because they typically produce a superior seal, in-ear monitors (IEMs) and earbud-type earphones are said to be better at blocking ambient noise. The type of earphones, ear tip material, design, and fit all influence how effectively it can decrease background noise passively.

Noise cancellation that is active

While passive noise cancellation muffles sound by forming a “physical barrier,” ANC takes a different approach by “neutralising” incoming sound waves from your surroundings. ANC headphones have small microphones that create sound waves with opposite signals to those of the incoming sound waves from your environment, cancelling each other out. It’s the same as adding +3 and -3 and getting a result of zero (silence).

ANC setup

A chipset, a speaker, and a set of feedback microphones comprise an ANC system. The microphones pick up sound from both inside and outside the headphones when ANC is turned on. After determining the type of incoming sound signals, the ANC chipset will execute algorithms that invert the sound waves and emit an opposing signal to cancel out the incoming ones from the surroundings.
